WIDOW’S-PEAKED assassin Howard Devoto rashly bailed as Buzzcocks frontman in January ’77, just days after the trailblazing Spiral Scratch EP hit turntables. He cited punk’s already-congealing orthodoxies as his motive and threatened something different. As his old band were soon in the Top 20 and on their way to punk canonisation, this could have left him with some serious egg on his face. Instead, in autumn ’77, Devoto launched Magazine, whose back catalogue is here re-buffed on a variety of novel vinyl hues, available individually and in a limited edition box set.
