New Delhi— Enveloped by heavy smog, three girls play with a balloon on November 6. Delhi is now the world’s most polluted city. Earlier this month, as a dense cloud of smog settled over the Indian capital, the problem became so bad the government stopped construction and closed schools. Even if the smog dissipates, analysts say, continued exposure to harmful pollutants in the air is equivalent to smoking multiple packs of cigarettes a day. One woman told The New York Times that breathing there is like living inside “a gas chamber.”
