One year after 1931’s Dracula horrified the world, Vampyr, a haunting German/French film, was unleashed upon a frightened public. Nightmarish in design, this black and white classic, which was loosely based on the 1872 novella of vampire fiction, Carmilla, presents the perfect topic for a creepy cardboard collection. “My inspiration for this set came while working on the Nosferatu set,” explained Richard J. Fowlks of RJF Image/Design. “I was watching some old movies and my son asked me about Nosferatu. I told him about when I first saw it in college in my film appreciation class and he wanted to see more. We watched a few films, but he was the most interested in Vampyr. We talked a lot about the movie, the early vampire lore and surrealism in art. He wanted to help me put together a set of cards along the lines of the Nosferatu set. I feel the film is important and has just as many visual beats that are striking for trading cards. My hope is that the set will bring more awareness to a film that is underrated, in my opinion, in film history and the origins of horror on film.”
