AS WELL as High ISO noise reduction, you can apply long exposure noise reduction to your night-time shots. You’ll find this option in the Shooting menu. It tackles the type of noise that’s generated by the heat of a long exposure – including ‘stuck’ pixels that show up as bright pinpricks of light in the same place in each shot. Activating it means that the camera essentially creates two exposures. The second one is made with the shutter closed so that the camera can map where the noise is and then remove it from the main image. The camera will be out of action during this second exposure, and the longer the exposure, the longer it takes. If you use Bulb mode to create exposures beyond 30 seconds, you can imagine how long you have to wait between shots…
