EXPERTS FLY HEAVEN AND HELL
Being based at Rutland Water meant Robbie Winram is able to fish a wide range of techniques throughout the season from Buzzers and Crunchers to Blobs and Boobies. But his favourite time of all is the Autumn when he
can target the fry feeders over the weed beds, whether from the bank or boat. While Winram will have boxes full of fry imitations there’s one pattern that surpasses all others and that’s the Suspender Minkie. This zonker pattern is tied with either a mink or rabbit strip and a cylindrical foam post that sits over the eye. This allows the pattern to hang in the water’s surface where it looks like a crippled fry. The Suspender Minkie has everything going for it: it is suggestive of a little fish, it has amazing movement (thanks to the
materials it is tied with) and when retrieved through a ripple it sets up an enticing wake that trout find irresistible.
