Alan Titchmarsh is one of the cheeriest people on TV. He’s been appearing on our screens talking about gardening, since 1983, when he presented the Chelsea Flower Show for the BBC. We meet at the offices of his book publishers in London to talk about his new novel The Scarlet Nightingale, and he’s every bit as upbeat and friendly as he is when he’s broadcasting.
