How ignoring your joints can lead to injury

How often do you think about your joints, or do anything specific for their wellbeing? Runners place huge pressure on their lower limbs, the ankles, knees and hips, but so few of us do anything to counteract that. Runners who neglect their joints are more likely to pick up injuries, in those key regions or connected areas. Yet there’s plenty you can do, in your technique, kit, diet, exercises and even the surfaces you run on, to ensure good joint health.
JOINT HEALTH
“Running is a whole-body activity your bodies have evolved to be able to do naturally”, says Avni Trivedi, an osteopath at Triyoga, Central London, with a special interest in women’s health, movement and pregnancy care. “Joints are made up of cartilage and connective tissue. Each joint is capable of specific movements, and the joints work in sequence like a well-rehearsed orchestra.”
