Manawaker Studio is a niche American market which makes podcasts and publishes interactive fiction. Currently seeking interactive fiction for Make Your Way: An Anthology of Choices, the team define interactive fiction as a story which requires ‘some level of interaction from the audience’. Examples may be ‘Folding poems? Puzzles? Multiple-choice comicbook? Card games?… Does it require the audience to have a pencil or a dice or a scissors? Does interacting with the work destroy the pages?’ Adult content and topics are acceptable, but no graphic sex or gore. Writers of choosable path fiction please note, a choosable fiction interactive story should not always be about trying to figure out how to allow the character to survive.
This is a print anthology so no colour in the stories please, and avoid a lot of digital interaction. This time the editors ‘might accept one or two stories that require the audience to use a phone or web browser for part of the experience’ but they are seeking different, less usual interactions. Simultaneous and multiple submissions are accepted, but not reprints. Email subs with ‘Make Your Way Submission’, surname, and the title of the work in the subject line. Include a brief cover letter and a bio (65 words max) in the body of the email. Writers may also add a url for an online portfolio or blog.
There is currently no deadline, with plans to keep the sub call open until the book is full. Response time ‘will vary wildly, ranging from a couple of weeks to six or more months. Generally, rejections will be faster than acceptances.’ Payment is 1¢ a word for text fiction, $10 per page of sequential art fiction, and $100 for the cover illustration.
