Cheers to another year
When it came to her special day, sadly our columnist found that not all her birthday wishes were destined to come true.

My last birthday started well. Firstly, it was the morning the bins get collected and, as we all know, this is my favourite day of the week. Then it started raining heavily, which created the perfect conditions for my planned day.
A whole day of “me” time and a list of activities I was determined to get through: a facial, some daytime TV, a spot of reading and knitting. I’d purchased a pricey packet of delicious French potato chips and hidden them from the rest of the household for weeks in my “stash spot”. I was going to eat the entire packet, washing them down with an indulgent daytime brandy and dry. No chores, no demands from others, just a blissful day that was all about me.
