“Charles Dickens popularised the conception of a Christmas with much meat and drink, great fires in greater fireplaces, toasts, snow, holly and other very jolly things. We all expect these concomitants but do not always get them. With a little imagination, however, each can clothe any scene in which he figures with all the Dickensian attributes.
