Energy consumption is a huge concern for many – and rightly so. From April, the energy price cap will increase by 21% , inflating the average household bill to £3,000 a year, according to Ofgem. Since heating and hot water account for around half of the typical energy bill, many homeowners are seeking ways to control, and reduce, their output.
Enabling you to micromanage your heating, smar t thermostats have long been hailed as an energy-saving solution. But given they can set you back hundreds of pounds, if not thousands, are they wor th the cost? Here I’m looking at what smart thermostats are, how they work and whether they’re the answer to spiralling energy bills.
What is a smart thermostat?
While standard thermostats monitor air temperature and trigger the heating when it drops below the pre-set figure, smart thermostats are more intuitive. Combining a digital inter face with a smar tphone app, they connect your heating system to the internet , enabling you to control temperatures from any where, when home and away.
