CRAIG AUCKLAND, FOTOHAUS
Low energy abode
This new build home was designed by Emmett Russell Architects to make the most of a triangular plot between terraced Victorian houses and a railway embankment in Bristol. The unusual site meant the architects had to come up with a creative solution that would fit into the suburban landscape, without imposing on neighbours.
The resulting three-storey building encompasses a dynamic open-plan downstairs, with two bedrooms overlooking the railway on the first floor. On the top storey, the master bedroom benefits from a west-facing balcony that enjoys the evening sun. The owners wanted
a low energy home, so the architects specified a highly insulated and airtight timber frame construction, packed with recycled newspaper cellulose insulation, and triple glazed windows throughout. The house is finished in a breathable render and bricks to add texture.
The open-plan kitchen-living zone is set at an angle to make best use of the space and views out to the garden.
Two sets of oversized sliding doors open from the middle to help connect the house and patio. The architects also designed in a timber-clad roof overhang to shade the indoors and prevent overheating in the summer.
