Extensive collection sold in Melbourne reveals the history and exploration of Australia

ASSEMBLED over 50 years, the splendid Denis Joachim collection of books, maps, documents, prints, etc, relating to the history and exploration of Australia ran to more than 1100 lots.

It was sold over two days, June 19-20, by Australian Book Auctions in conjunction with Mossgreen Auctions.

Some of the highlights are reported below and in the accompanying caption stories, together with related lots from other recent auctions.

On a number of occasions reference is made to comparable copies sold as part of the Davidson Collection, an exceptional Australian library dispersed by ABA in 2005-06.

Classic ‘First Fleet’ works

Among the classic ‘First Fleet’ works, the early accounts of the colonisation of Australia, was a 1789 first of The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island.

In a rebacked period binding of speckled calf, this deluxe issue of the first official record, the 31 (of 54) natural history plates fully coloured on laid paper, also contained a portrait of Lieutenant Watts found in only a few first edition copies.

It sold at Aus$55,000 (£27,500) – which in sterling terms was only marginally short of the record set in 2005 for the Davidson copy.
