Mod Brit favourites in council sell-of
Pictures by Mod Brit artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Julian Trevelyan will go under the hammer at Cambridge auction house Cheins on March 21 following a council’s decision to off-load artworks from storage.
The 428 pictures had been acquired over a number of years by Hertfordshire County Council. It began buying such works in 1949 as part of the School Loan Collection, a post-war initiative founded by Sir John Newsom, Hertfordshire’s chief education officer, to teach pupils across the county about art.
