Islay-based writer Les Wilson has won 2018 Saltire History Book of the Year Award.
The Drowned and the Saved, an extensively researched account of the sinking of US troopships Tuscania and Otranto off the coast of Islay in 1918, is a tribute to those who died and an exploration of the huge impact of the disaster on survivors, rescuers and the local community.
Announced as part of the 2018 Saltire Literary Awards in Edinburgh on Friday November 30, Wilson’s book emerged as this year’s history book category winner from a shortlist of six titles.
