JAKE WIGHTMAN finished a “long old slog” of a season with a win on the Newcastle roads in the mile, taking down the likes of Bernard Lagat and Marcin Lewandowski in the process.

Clocking a time of 4:05.7, Wightman held off late surges down the 150m straight synthetic track from European indoor 800m champion Lewandowski, who came second in 4:05.98, and Australian 1500m finalist from Rio Ryan Gregson (4:06.21).
