Aviation Specials  |  The French Foreign Legion
The French Foreign Legion is shrouded in mystery and has cultivated a fearsome reputation envied by its allies. It is one of the last military formations in the world that recruits on reputation, refusing to engage with marketing campaign.
Each day, Legion hopefuls arrive in France to join up, with an average of 9,000 hoping to be accepted each year¬– an average of just 1,100 are. This elite force emerged in the 1800s, formed from refugees in France. Its ethos of never surrender was forged at Camerone in Mexico when a handful of legionnaires fought to the death against more than 2,000 Mexican soldiers.
The Legion offers men from all over the world a fresh start in life with a new identity. Some arrive after a period in prison, others simply run away from domestic issues. It is professional military force, contributing to French national defence and in recent years has deployed on operations to the Congo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.
