On 10th July, two years on from Richard Bacon MP’s House report aimed at scaling up self-commissioned housing in the UK, Build It joined other NaCSBA gold members at the Houses of Parliament for a rallying cry. In House, Bacon set out a six-point plan to scale up self build, belatedly welcomed by the government in summer 2022. Some encouraging progress has been made, such as the creation of a selfcommissioned homes unit at Homes England. But a lot of work remains – particularly raising awareness of Right to Build registers, tightening legislation so councils can’t worm out of their obligations to support custom housebuilding, and sorting out VAT rules for serviced plot sales. The good news for self builders is that we have someone as passionate as Richard Bacon fighting the cause within government.
