When I was 24, I went to a Gossip concert. My queer, fat, femme friend was there too, wearing a dress. This was one of those times I had considered wearing a babe dress, but chose not to because no one else would. Beth totally complimented her dress and I was just standing there being one of the crowd. I decided in that moment that I wasn’t going to hold myself back anymore. Quentin Crisp defined style as being yourself on purpose. That moment when I really started doing it was a huge point of liberation for me.
