The Saints on Ex
Assegai
by Mne Richards, A Coy
A Coy (the Saints) recently deployed to Longmoor Training Area for Ex Assegai, a comprehensive training package focused on Urban Operations and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) in a high threat environment. The exercise was conducted alongside the Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ), the UK’s one-star deployable crisis response headquarters. Over the course of the exercise, the Company carried out a range of urban tasks including patrolling, strike operations, cordon operations, vehicle checkpoints and public order scenarios.

A Coy HQ worked closely with JFHQ on joint planning to enhance preparedness for a NEO. This collaboration significantly improved the Coy’s and 40 Cdo’s understanding of the complexities involved in executing an evacuation under time-sensitive and dynamic conditions. The planning process provided valuable insights into integrating with a higher formation and operating within a broader operational framework.
Following this phase, we deployed to Bramley Training Area to support JFHQ’s Evacuation Handling Centre (EHC) where the Company provided Force Protection and offensive capability, applying lessons learned from earlier training serials. This stage tested Alpha’s ability to operate in direct support of JFHQ and adapt to evolving judgemental based scenarios.
Elements of the Coy established Vehicle Check Points (VCPs) and initial search points, conducting eligibility checks in line with JFHQ criteria. The Coy also maintained a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) to respond to short-notice tasks, as well as provide additional support to Eligible Persons and JFHQ personnel as the situation became increasingly hostile. Tensions escalated when a Violent Extremist Organisation (VEO) in the scenario approached one of the VCPs, prompting the immediate deployment of the QRF in MRZR tactical vehicles. Shortly afterwards, large crowds of role players stormed the EHC, forcing A Coy and JFHQ to execute a hasty withdrawal under pressure.
In response, 1 and 3 Tps moved to secure a Helicopter Landing Site (HLS) while 2 Tp and elements from Information Warfare (IW) Tp held back crowds to enable the safe extraction of JFHQ personnel. Despite the challenging and rapidly evolving situation, all elements of the Coy operated with cohesion and discipline, ensuring an orderly withdrawal. The Coy’s swift and controlled response demonstrated professionalism, adaptability and the ability to operate effectively in complex environments that escalate from low to high threat.
