’I thought type 2 diabetes was for ever – it isn’t!’

After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2012, Richard thought he’d be on pills for the rest of his life. But after he lost a quarter of his body weight using delicious low-carb recipes and making healthy lifestyle changes, his doctor took him off all medications.

ONE DAY, WHEN I WAS 49, I woke up after a particularly heavy night of cocktails and doughnuts to find I couldn’t see properly. Overnight my vision had become completely blurry as the result of a dramatic and uncontrolled spike in my blood sugars. Tests confirmed I had type 2 diabetes. It was a shock.

I wasn’t alone. One in 10 men in the UK currently has diabetes and it’s estimated that by 2025 five million people will be living with the condition, with a further 11.9 million people suffering from pre-diabetes.
