Back in the 1960s, when Dr John Myers created intravenous vitamin infusions, his ‘Myers’ cocktail’ – including vits B and C, magnesium, and calcium – was for his patients. Decades on, they’re now mainstream, with celeb fans including Rihanna and Madonna, and are available in UK clinics. The theory is that your body only absorbs some of the vitamins, minerals and amino acids from food, but as the IV vitamin infusion bypasses your digestive system, all are taken in. Big doses are involved, but once your body gets what it needs, your kidneys filter out the rest.
WHAT’S INVOLVED?
You’ll fill out a health questionnaire and discuss your needs with the doctor, who’ll create a vitamin mix that best suits you. This is added to a saline solution with the same salt concentration as your blood, to help with absorption, then you’re given a local anaesthetic and hooked up to a drip. It takes around an hour, and you should feel effects almost straight away. But it’s not cheap, costing at least £150.
