A champion of eating healthily without demonising any food groups, chef Gizzi Erskine talks confidence, and her struggle with anxiety

‘I don’t have the same boundaries as everyone else,’ says Gizzi Erskine with a wry laugh, the same easy-going, warm nature we first saw when she burst on to our TV screens in 2007 with Cook Yourself Thin still very much in evidence. ‘Not to make a joke out of my condition, but I wear my heart on my sleeve and I talk a lot.’ The chef, cookbook author and cofounder of East London’s Mare Street Market, who has a penchant for on-point eyeliner and going off on a tangent, has always been refreshingly open about her struggle with ADHD and anxiety – and today is no exception. ‘The diagnosis of ADHD was the most useful of my life. As soon as I was put on medication, everything became better,’ she explains. ‘I call it my “superpower” – it gives me an inability to be insecure. It’s always been easy for me to get a surge of energy from anything practical. It’s really useful in the kitchen as you’re always two steps ahead.’
