Iwas born, quite a long time ago, in Bowling, a village on the banks of the Clyde, twelve miles from Glasgow and three miles from Dumbarton. Throughout my childhood the village seemed to be unchanging. Most of my friends had parents, and even grandparents, who knew each other as children and had gone to school together.
