Big decorating decisions to make? We uncover what’s sizzling hot and what’s stone-cold not

Picture research Charlotte Coward-Williams

Wading into the treacherous world of interior trends can be a tricky – and expensive – business. Keeping up with the Joneses is one thing, but keeping up with all the stylists, homeware brands, authors and celebrities on a seasonal basis? Well, that’s a whole different (retro-style) kettle of (colour-blocked) fish. This issue we’ve done the hard work for you and combed through a never-ending assortment of looks, schemes and accessories, all claiming to be The Next Big Thing. The result? A delectable menu of decorating trends to pick and mix, safe in the knowledge that these designs are not going to slip out of style any time soon. Notepads at the ready... Let’s begin.

Black, white...

Monochrome is a trend that never loses speed, but that’s not to say we can’t switch up the gears. This season has seen it paired with an eclectic collection of raw materials, breaking the whole look away from clean and clinical and into an industrial rustic vibe. Copper, leather and bare wood work especially well here, as seen in this modern vignette from Rockett St George. Let’s face it, life’s so beautifully simple when it’s laid out in black and white.

About Homestyle

I always feel incredibly lucky that it’s part of my job to go around the country visiting beautiful homes to shoot for the magazine, and this month was particularly special. I was so inspired by the home of Gigi Eligoloff (this month’s cover girl, see page 16). She has filled her small London home almost entirely from lost and second-hand treasures, yet the result is a relaxed and surprisingly sophisticated style that can’t help but make you smile. She really ticked the HomeStyle box when we discovered she had bought her entire kitchen on Gumtree for £900! Another showstopper this issue is the upcycling feature – turn to page 85 right now for the most stunning cupboard revamp. It’s proof that breathing life back into things other people don’t want can create items that will be treasured for generations to come. And if you’re about to embark on your own makeover, don’t miss our top trend hot list on page 74 – with these ideas, you won’t just be one small step ahead of the crowds, you’ll be one huge HomeStyle leap!
