At the final stage of any musical project comes mixing and mastering. Where mixing is an art in itself, setting the levels of each track in the mix, the same importance could be placed on mastering. In postproduction terms, this phase is about preparing a final mix for distribution or export, unifying an overall ‘sound’ across recordings. So this tends to cover aspects like volume levels but predominantly equalisation of certain frequencies. GarageBand has a Visual EQ plug-in for this purpose, but for beginner and intermediate users this can seem a little confusing. Thankfully, the app provides presets you can apply to not only individual instrument tracks, but the whole project. We’ll show you how to apply both techniques.
