NEW PRODUCTS FOR 2018
Glee is a garden and outdoor living trade show for the retail industry held each autumn at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. It gives companies a platform to promote their products, both current and new. So here are a few products to look out for in the new year. Some you can buy direct from the supplier, others will start becoming available in UK garden centres and other retail outlets.
SLUGS, BUGS AND GRUBS
Slugs and snails, those twins of evil in the garden, have a new deterrent to contend with in the form of Slugless. This consists of spiky straw pellets – 100% organic – which o contact with water expand x four to cre a protective crust too dry for slugs and snails to traverse. At the same time this crust holds moisture beneath, suppresses weeds and biodegrades gradually over 12 months, releasing nutrients into the soil. Pet and children friendly, these pellets are available in a range of sizes, starting at £5.99. www.slugless.com Neudorff Slugg Ultra is a more powerful version of the Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer. The pellets are much smaller, which makes them ideal for targeting the younger slugs as they hatch. Also, look out for their three non-refrigerated nematode products that will control specific garden pests on your plot. LawnGrubFree (£29.99), LeatherJacketFree (£19.99) and VineWeevilFree (£19.99) contain parasitic nematodes – tiny creatures naked to the eye – that feed on pest larvae. Application is easy – simply dissolve the sachets in water and pour over your chosen area, having dampened it with water already. Or you can apply with a Neudorff Nemasprayer (£13.99).
Origins Bug Control from Scotts manages garden pests, including greenfly, blackfly, whitefly, scale insects, mealy bugs, red spider mites and other mites. This product is for use on homegrown fruit and veg and allows same-day spray and eat (contains rapeseed oil).
Scotts too join in the battle against slugs with their Origins Slug Control (contains ferric phosphate). £5.99, www.lovethegarden.com
