In this series we look at flowers that complement the veg garden as edible blooms, cut flowers or by attracting pollinators

Marigold flowers areedible although you don’twantto eat alot of them! Sprinkling afew petals to pretty up asalad is fine. They have a slightly citrus flavour.

French or African marigolds (tagetes) are like little rays of sunshine in your garden and flower for many months. French marigolds (Tagetes patula) are small flowered and make good compact bedding plants. They are ideal for containers and planting among your veggies. Also look out for the simple daisy-flowered wild-origin type, the signet marigold (Tagetes tenuifolia), such as ‘Golden Gem’.These will attract hoverflies and other pollinators more readily than some of the complex double bloom types. African marigolds (Tagetes erecta) tend to be much taller with big, blousy blooms.
