LIFT TURNIPS

Turnips sown in late summer in the garden should now have made roots about the size of tennis balls and are perfect to lift and eat. Don’t be tempted to leave them in the garden as they won’t grow any more and unlike their cousins, swedes, turnips are not fully hardy and a heavy frost will spoil them. Once lifted they will store for several weeks in a fridge

PICK CALABRESE

Calabrese, which is a type of broccoli, is a very tasty vegetable to grow and can be cropped from mid-summer until November, depending on the variety you grow. The large heads produced on calabrese are not as hardy as the winter, sprouting types of broccoli and need to be picked before winter sets in. Fortunately, it does freeze well, so if you have a glut it won’t go to waste.
