French cosmonauts set off on a wobbly maiden run
As their name (taken from the orgasmic lifeforce ‘discovered’ by infamous Austrian doctor Wilhelm Reich) suggests, the space-rock ructions of this French quintet bridle with libidinous energy. Attempts to harness these cosmic pulses surface in blistering riffs and flamboyant arabesques, as on epic opener Erstes Ritual and Rhyme Of The Ancient Astronaut’s atavistic take on Henry Cow’s progressive flights. Yet across the 80-minute four-suite sprawl, the urgency begins to wane. Prosaic pub-rock and cod-reggae vibes are persistent menaces, while Olga Rostropovitch’s impressive pipes often veer into unnecessary histrionics, tempering the potency of the band’s most industrious into-the-void jams. The band’s orgonic harvest threatens to become a honeymoon headache, one that could be leavened by a few judicious edits.
