When Korn released 13th album The Nothing in September 2019, it was clear frontman Jonathan Davis had been through a deeply bleak time. Not only had his estranged wife, Deven, passed away from an accidental overdose, he had also lost his mum. Jonathan was subsequently left asking why his life had been filled with tragedy, and whether it was the cosmic price he had to pay in exchange for bringing thousands of fans joy through his music.
“I felt like I was constantly being hounded and fucked with my whole life because of all the good I’ve done in the world,” he told us. “There’s a lyric in the record where I said: ‘For every good thing I’ve done there’s a price to pay, and the price has left me horrified’ [album closer Surrend er To Failure]. And the record is just me dealing with that.”
Happily, Jonathan seems to be in a better place these days. During the pandemic Korn wrote a new album: Requiem. On its first single, Start The Healing, he sings: ‘I can take it all away, the feelings / Break apart the pain and start the healin g.’
