Sir,
I will give your contributor (D Rixson, The Oban Times, December 15) the benefit of the doubt in that he didn’t deliberately intend to mislead your readers into believing that, because the secretariat of Boundary Commission for Scotland’s office is in Edinburgh, the proposed changes to Westminster parliament constituency boundaries are somehow of our own doing or perhaps even at the behest of the Scottish Government.
For the sake of clarity, the Boundary Commission for Scotland is a public body sponsored and wholly funded by the Scotland Office and chaired (ex-officio) by the speaker of the House of Commons. The deputy chair in effect leads the commission and is appointed by the Lord President of the Court of Session, while the two other commissioners are appointed by the Secretary of State for Scotland.
