Suzy Walker explores the many joys of Dumfries and Galloway
48 HOURS
Arecent survey voted Scotland the most beautiful country in the world,* so what better time to fl y into Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city and UNESCO City of Music, and have a road trip to explore the undulating coastline of Dumfries and Galloway? My first stop on Saturday morning is the Buddhist Samye Ling monastery, 90 minutes away, with its gold temple and ancient wisdom. Here, you can light a yak butter candle for world peace or visit the Tara Healing Garden and learn about how to preserve and propagate medicinal herbs native to Tibet, and grow them in the UK. I meet Heather Regan-Addis and Choden, a Buddhist monk, co-founders of the Mindfulness Association, who coach me on how to beat overwhelm (see podcast below). Samye Ling is situated in Eskdalemuir and is open to visitors all year round. It also runs mindfulness and yoga courses.
