WEST Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has acquired a parcel of land needed to start work on the proposed new station at Aldridge on the Birmingham-Walsall route. The £400,000 deal secures the old station approach, previously owned by an NHS health centre.The acquisition completes the land required for the new station, and paves the way for redevelopment to start.
WALKDEN station on the Manchester-Wigan lineisto become a park and ride facility after plans were approved by local authorities.The upgraded site will feature more than 100 parking spaces, four motorcycle bays and cycle storage, electric vehicle charging points, new lighting and CCTV, landscaping and boundary fencing.

St Helens bridge repair
NETWORK Rail contractors have refurbished a major railway bridge in St Helens, Lancashire. The bridge across the A570 Rainford bypass has been strengthened and waterproofed, steel work has been repainted and the track replaced, costing £1.4million.
1940s Esk Valley track successfully replaced
MORE than amile and ahalf of track dating from the 1940s has been replaced on the Middlesbrough-Whitby line in North Yorkshire. Between February 12 and 21, the line was closed as old track, ballast and sleepers were lifted and replaced at Commondale, Castleton Moor and Danby.
The £2.7million project follows similar improvements between Lealholm and Danby in September.
Two new bridges for Norfolk are complete
WORK to replace two bridges at Eccles Heath and Postwick in Norfolk was completed on January 31. The former, on the Thetford-Norwich line, was damaged ina road traffic incident in 2017 and has reopened after more than three years, while the bridge at Postwick on the Norwich-Yarmouth line was life expired and will reopen later this year.
Essex waiting rooms’ £190k refurbishment
THREE station waiting rooms in Essex have been refurbished by Greater Anglia at a cost of £190,000. The facilities at Audley End, Cheshunt, and Tottenham Hale have received CCTV, new information screens, seating, flooring and fresh decoration throughout, as well as more energy efficient heating and air conditioning. Automatic doors have also been installed at Tottenham Hale and Audley End to make the waiting rooms more accessible.

ST MARY Cray station in Kent is being upgraded to provide better access and improved facilities for all passengers. The £4million project is adding two passenger lifts, improvements to the ticket office and the relocation of a retail unit to create more space for the new lift shaft. Existing staircases and ramps will also be upgraded with new handrails and tactile surfacing.
