NETWORK Rail has begun a £7.5m renovation project to refurbish and repaint the northern approach spans to the iconic Forth Bridge from North Queensferry.
The project, which commenced in February 2021, has now moved to the grit blasting stage to remove layers of old lead paint from the approach to the 130-year-old structure.
Contractor Balfour Beatty has created an encapsulated zone to remove the old paint before repainting it with a glass flake expoxy-based system, just as the main cantilever sections were treated some years ago.The paint will mean repainting will not be needed for a further three decades.
Network Rail has engaged with the local community who have property under or close to where the work is taking place, which will run into early 2022.Rail services are unaffected.
