Drumboe in triumphant Donegal homecoming
County Donegal locomotive returns to spiritual home after six decades away
COUNTY Donegal Railways 2-6-4T No. 5 Drumboe made a triumphant return to Donegal Town station last month following the completion of a cosmetic overhaul by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland’s (RPSI) engineering arm, Heritage Engineering Ireland, at Whitehead.
The 1907-built Nasmyth Wilson locomotive, which headed the last passenger train on the County Donegal system in 1959, moved to its new home at the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre on October 9. The move marked the culmination of a €100,000 project, which was partly funded by a €65,000 grant from Donegal Local Development CLG.
