Out and about in the Rockies

A small set of watercolours, two or three sketchbooks and some drawing pens – what more do you need when you’re off to the Canadian Rockies? Ian Sidaway describes the road to discovery

Travelling Materials, watercolour and collage, 8¼ × 23in (21×60cm).

This watercolour was started before we left home and was intended to show the materials that I took with me. Once home I cut and collaged on the boarding card and bag check ticket, then wrote the names of the places and motels visited using a graphite pencil

‘In my opinion nothing will ever open up this country for painting better than some forest fires on a vast scale.’ So wrote Edward Bawden in a letter to John Nash during his time as a guest tutor at the Banff School of Art in 1949 and 1950. Bawden produced several works of the area around Banff and Canmore, and it was these works that were my introduction to the area. A sale to a collector in Vancouver led to a serendipitous invite to stay should I ever be in British Columbia and sometime later plans were set in motion to visit the Rockies in British Columbia and Alberta.
