PIT STOP
COMBATING CALORIES
New targets are expected to be set by Public Health England in the next 12 months to combat childhood obesity. Officials want a reduction in calories in fast foods and a new calorie-reduction programme will be modelled on last year’s sugar-reduction programme.
Although under scrutiny by health and children’s groups for being too weak, the programme has seen success, with manufacturers of sugary foods and soft drinks cutting the amount of sugar in nine types of products, including cereals, biscuits and ice-cream.
