New research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has shown that the performance of female athletes is negatively impacted by their menstrual cycle. Having researched female rugby players, the study reveals how seven in 10 female athletes suffer during their menstrual cycle with symptoms like heavy bleeding, flooding, reduced energy levels, worry, distraction, fluctuating emotions and reduced motivation. The report also emphasises the need for support teams and clinicians to develop awareness, openness, knowledge and understanding about the menstrual cycle. There is still a need to normalise conversations about the menstrual cycle, especially when it comes to discussing concerns with male counterparts or coaches.
