STUDIO 54: THE DOCUMENTARY
DOGWOOF
Studio 54 first unhooked its velvet rope 41 years ago, yet it remains the ultimate pantheon of disco and decadence. The New York nightspot of choice for celebrities such as Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, Deborah Harry, Liza Minnelli and Grace Jones, its mythology remains an endless source of fascination. With Studio 54: The Documentary, director Matt Tyrnauer attempts to demystify the haven of hedonism through in-depth interviews with founder Ian Schrager and its famed clientele of club freaks.
Despite its enduring legacy, the club actually only ran for 33 tumultuous months, each of which is explored in gratuitous detail.
The rise and coke-fuelled glory days of the world’s most iconic superclub make for a compelling subject, particularly the latter ‘Paradise Lost’ section of the film, which depicts the club’s dark side, stoked by a dependency on drugs, booze and illicit sex that ravaged the clientele, regardless of status, health or wealth.
