No-Man’s Tim Bowness settles into his comfort zone on his latest collection. Melodically he remains somewhat formulaic, but he’s always embraced melancholy, and Northern Rain and Darkline – the latter featuring Richard Barbieri on Japan-like synths – are also as desolate as their names suggest, if nevertheless beautiful. With its arrangement unusually bare, The Hitman Who Missed’s title again signposts its noir-ish tendencies, but the spacious One Last Call, with its neat vibraphone embellishments, offers a suitably seductive conclusion.
