Tom Leadon
September 16, 1952 – March 22, 2023
Guitarist Tom Leadon was a co-founding member of Tom Petty’s original countryrock band from the 1970s, Mudcrutch, and returned to the line-up when it reconvened in 2007. His brother Bernie was guitarist with the Eagles. The 70-yearold from Minnesota, who also played bass for Linda Ronstadt and with the band Silver, died of natural causes.
Jim Durkin
February 7, 1965 – March 8, 2023
Californian thrashers Dark Angel are mourning their lead guitarist Jim Durkin, declaring themselves “deeply saddened and crushed” over the loss of the 58-yearold. Durkin had played with Dark Angel from 1981 until a break-up in 1992 before reuniting between 2002 and 2005, and then once again from 2013 until the present day.
Bobby Caldwell
August 15, 1951 – March 14, 2023
New Yorker Bobby Caldwell was a singer, songwriter and musician whose work ranged from soul to jazz and adult contemporary. Having caught a break as a rhythm guitarist for Little Richard, he went on to write hits for Michael Bolton, Chicago and Peter Cetera, among others. 71 years old at the time of his passing, Caldwell died at home in New Jersey in the arms of his wife.
George Atkins Senior
Died March 30, 2023
The original owner of the hugely popular Nottingham venue Rock City has died of unknown cause. George Akins Senior, 94, launched Rock City in December 1980, and it hosted gigs by David Bowie, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, the Ramones, Megadeth and countless more. A statement said: “George Senior’s passion for entertainment was infectious, and his vision brought together fans and artists alike from all over the world.”
Alan Burridge
Died March 13, 2023
The Motörhead organisation says it will miss Alan Burridge, the editor of Motörheadbangers, the band’s official fan club magazine since 1979. A group statement described Burridge as a “totemic figure in the world of Motörhead”, and “Motörhead’s loyal and trusted historian and discographer, writing several books about the band”. A close friend of Lemmy, he had been battling multiple sclerosis for some time.
