Whereas many musicians fret over their recording careers, Dave Alvin just books a studio whenever he has some spare cash, rounds up a bunch of his guitar-picking, singersongwriter, alt.country, honkytonk mates and lays down a couple of songs. Whatever takes his fancy, really. The main thing is to have fun doing it. And then every so often he gathers up the tracks and sticks them out on a record.
