Frederick John Widgery (1861- 1942) was both a West Country artist and a civic figure. He became mayor of Exeter in 1903 and the city and the surrounding countryside feature predominantly in his work. Two gouaches on paper that were offered as a single lot at Bristol Auction Rooms on July 16 were fairly typical. Arins Tor Dartmoor and The East Okement, Okehampton, Devon (shown here) both measured 15¾ x 19¼in (40 x 49cm) and were estimated at £80-120.
