At this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple made the long-expected announcement of their planned transition from Intel processors (and graphics chips) to their own ARM-based CPUs, as deployed very successfully indeed in the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. While it’s far too soon to predict exactly what effect this fundamental change to the architecture of the Mac will mean for musicians, Rosetta 2 compatibility technology will ensure that existing apps work fine on ARM until they’re updated to run natively (the original Rosetta serving the exact same purpose when Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel in 2005), and Apple have promised support for Intel Macs “for years to come”. No need to panic, then, and more news as we get it.
