Summer wouldn’t be summer without festivals and cultural events in some of Italy’s most scenic locations. So in this edition, dear international readers, we bring you a selection of dance festivals: the most significant and noteworthy of those happening in the Bel Paese, from July to September.
Our cover story is dedicated to Semyon Chudin, Principal Dancer at the Bolshoi Ballet and guest artist at the Wiener Staatsballett. His career began in Seoul and landed in Moscow at the world’s largest theatre. But browse these pages and you’ll discover another big name: Bill T. Jones, an undisputed star of the international dance scene for more than thirty-five years. A politically-engaged artist and activist, Jones has created pieces in which dance is interwoven with song, words, and stories, alternating with works in which fluidity of movement takes over. Another ‘engagé’ artist is the Frenchman of Algerian descent, Rachid Ouramdane, Co-director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Grenoble, France, who we interviewed.
In May, a new director took over at La Scala Theatre Ballet: Frédéric Olivieri, called to direct Italy’s most important ballet company for the second time, after a ten year hiatus. We asked him to tell us about his plans for the future, as well as new developments for the forthcoming 2017/2018 ballet season. In our multimedia content dancewords in motion we present a cutting-edge Italian artist who’s making waves: Alessandro Sciarroni, filmed in Venice during the Biennale Danza. And as always, we’ve travelled far and wide to see the main debut shows and review them for you. Enjoy!
