Norwegian post-metallers FIXATION battle mic issues, but they receive a warm reception at the end of each song. French prog metal outfit KLONE start slowly, but really grow into their set and are throwing shapes by the end; they’ve also got the audience on their side. The main focus of his set might be latest record Lightwork, but DEVIN TOWNSEND has such a rabid fanbase that he could do a whole show of rare B-sides and those in attendance would give his performance full marks. In recent years, the man so often dubbed ‘heavy metal’s mad scientist’ has toned down the eccentricities of his persona and live spectacle. Tonight is a textbook example – there are no elephants or huge visual screens, just a simple banner and a feverous audience hanging on every word and note that comes from the Canadian genius. Alongside the Lightwork material, there’s music from Terria, 1998’s Infinity in the guise of Truth and a wonderfully raucous Bad Devil, and even Deadhead from his Devin Townsend Band days. Closing song Love?, continuing Devin’s re-found appreciation for his work with Strapping Young Lad, sees Bristol conquered once again in the most sumptuous fashion.
