Whenever I take people out for forages they often tell me they’ve never foraged before, so I always ask about blackberries and nearly everyone replies with “Oh yeah, but blackberries don’t count” – of course they do!
Blackberries are one of the most common, delicious and bountiful wild fruits in our hedgerows. It’s easiest to leave the basket and take an old plastic food tub for collecting these (this way you’ll save any juice that comes out of the berries). But, be careful as it’s believed that the devil will curse anyone who eats blackberries after the 11th of October – fortunately, I’ve not felt the effects of this (yet!) and I’m out picking right up until November.
