Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band
Louisville continues to punch above its weight in the oddball country-rock stakes

Davis (centre): compared to Dylan andWaits
FOR the Kentucky-based indie-rocker Ryan Davis it’s been a slow but steady burn. As well as releasing several promising records under the State Champion moniker and making unearthly sounds with the uncategorisable Equipment Pointed Ankh, he also runs the excellent Sophomore Lounge record label, home to such disparate artists as Ned Collette, C Joynes and Arbor Labor Union. But with Dancing On The Edge, the first record he’s put out under his own name (backed by the Roadhouse Band), he’s shedding the ‘songwriter’s songwriter’ curse to emerge as, well, just a great songwriter. The album is an instant classic of oddball country-rock, with sprawling songs that stretch out in all kinds of marvellous and unexpected directions, thanks to an uncommonly dense lyric sheet and thoroughly inventive arrangements.
