MYSTIC PIZZA (1988)
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Set in the Portuguese- American community in the working-class fishing port of Mystic, Connecticut, the movie tells the story of three young friends. Studious Kat Arujo (Annabeth Gish), her free-spirited older sister Daisy (Julia Roberts) and their friend Jojo (Lili Taylor) work in Mystic Pizza, a restaurant owned by cuddly matriarch Leona (Conchata Ferrell). In a warm-up for Julia Roberts’ role in Pretty Woman, her character Daisy dates Charles, an upper-class Wasp (whom she suspects is using her), while sister Kat gets romantically entangled with the father of the girl she’s babysitting. Jojo, meanwhile, in a twist on a familiar narrative, has upset her fisherman fiancé by seeming to want him mainly for sex.
